Front and rear turn signals may use different bulb sizes, colors, electrical configurations, or lamp assemblies. Some vehicles also combine the turn signal with parking, tail, or brake light functions.

Find the Correct Turn Signal Bulb for Your Vehicle

Depending on the vehicle, you may see positions such as:

Pay close attention to the exact position. A front turn signal bulb should not automatically be assumed to fit the rear turn signal, even when both lights use the same color.
Front and Rear Turn Signal Bulbs
Front and rear turn signal systems can be designed differently. Some vehicles use replaceable incandescent bulbs at both ends, while others may use a conventional bulb in the front and an integrated LED assembly in the rear.
The bulb size, base, color, and electrical function can vary between the front and rear of the same vehicle.
For this reason, always identify whether you are replacing a front turn signal or rear turn signal before purchasing a bulb.
Common Turn Signal Bulb Sizes
Turn signal lamps can use many different automotive bulb families. Depending on the vehicle, common examples may include:
- 1156
- 1157
- 3156
- 3157
- 7440
- 7443
- 7507
- PY21W
These are examples only. Your vehicle may use a different bulb, a colored version of a common bulb, or an integrated LED signal assembly.
Two bulbs can appear almost identical but have different locating tabs, contacts, electrical functions, or base designs. Match the exact bulb number whenever possible.

Amber Turn Signal Bulbs
Many vehicles use amber light for the turn signal function. The amber color may come from the bulb itself or from the lens covering the bulb.
A lamp with a clear lens may require an amber bulb, while a lamp with an amber lens may use a clear bulb. Replacing an amber bulb with a clear bulb behind a clear lens can change the signal color and may make the light unsuitable for its intended function.
When replacing a turn signal bulb, check both the bulb number and the required color.
Bulb designations may sometimes include additional letters or variations that identify color or application differences. Do not assume that every bulb sharing the same basic number is identical.
Single-Function and Dual-Function Turn Signal Bulbs
Some turn signal bulbs perform only one function. Others are part of a dual-function lamp circuit.
For example, a front bulb may serve as both the parking light and turn signal. A rear bulb may perform both the brake light and turn signal function, depending on the vehicle’s lighting design.
Dual-function bulbs may have multiple electrical contacts or filaments that allow the bulb to operate at different brightness levels.
This makes it especially important to match the correct bulb number. A single-function bulb may physically resemble a dual-function bulb but may not operate correctly in the same socket.
LED Turn Signal Bulbs
LED alternatives are available for many traditional incandescent turn signal bulb sizes. They can provide rapid illumination, lower power consumption, and a different appearance.
However, turn signals are one of the applications where an LED conversion can create noticeable electrical compatibility issues.
Possible concerns include:
- Hyperflash or rapid blinking
- Bulb-out warning messages
- CAN bus compatibility
- Electrical polarity
- Incorrect brightness
- Physical clearance inside the lamp
- Improper light distribution

What Is Turn Signal Hyperflash?
Hyperflash is a condition where the turn signal blinks much faster than normal.
On many vehicles, the turn signal circuit is designed to detect the electrical load of the original incandescent bulb. When a bulb fails, the reduced electrical load can cause the indicator to flash rapidly as a warning to the driver.
Because LED bulbs generally draw less electrical power than incandescent bulbs, some vehicles may interpret an LED replacement as a failed bulb and trigger hyperflash.
The exact behavior depends on the vehicle’s flasher circuit, body control module, and electrical monitoring system.
Some LED products are designed with additional electronics intended to reduce compatibility issues, but results can vary by vehicle.
Why a Turn Signal May Blink Fast After Replacing the Bulb
If a turn signal begins blinking rapidly after bulb replacement, first make sure all turn signal bulbs are actually working.
A burned-out bulb on another corner of the vehicle may be causing the rapid flashing. A poorly seated replacement bulb, damaged socket, electrical connection problem, or incompatible LED conversion can also cause unusual flashing behavior.
Do not assume that the new bulb itself is the only possible cause.
Factory LED Turn Signals
Many newer vehicles use integrated LED turn signals. These may be built into the headlamp assembly, tail lamp assembly, side mirror, fender lamp, or another lighting unit.
In an integrated LED system, there may not be a conventional removable bulb to replace.
If an LED turn signal stops working, diagnosis may involve the lamp assembly, LED module, circuit board, wiring, connector, or vehicle control electronics.
Inspect the actual lighting assembly before purchasing a traditional replacement bulb.
Mirror and Side Turn Signals
Some vehicles include turn signal repeaters in the side mirrors or front fenders.
These lights are often separate from the primary front and rear turn signals and may use small replaceable bulbs, LED modules, or integrated assemblies.
Do not assume a side repeater or mirror signal uses the same bulb as another turn signal position on the vehicle.
Why Your Vehicle May Have More Than One Turn Signal Configuration
Turn signal equipment can vary between trim levels, body styles, production dates, markets, and lighting packages.
A base version of a vehicle may use conventional replaceable bulbs, while a premium trim uses integrated LED headlamps or tail lamps with built-in turn signals.
Different body styles can also have different rear lamp assemblies even when they share the same model name.

Understanding Your ALBulbs Turn Signal Results
ALBulbs may display a verification label with a turn signal fitment result.
- Not Verified — The result has supporting fitment information, but ALBulbs does not currently have enough qualifying confirmation to assign a higher verification level.
- Verified — The fitment has stronger supporting evidence, such as qualifying manufacturer information or confirmation from multiple sources.
- Cross-Checked Verified — The fitment has a higher level of independent supporting confirmation.
A Not Verified result does not automatically mean the bulb is wrong. It means additional confirmation is recommended before purchasing.

Check the Existing Bulb Before Ordering
Whenever practical, inspect the bulb already installed in the turn signal before purchasing a replacement.
Check the bulb number, base, contacts, color, and connector arrangement.
This is particularly important when:
- Your vehicle has multiple turn signal configurations
- The result is marked Not Verified
- The lamp housing has been replaced
- The vehicle has aftermarket lighting
- You are changing from incandescent to LED
If the installed bulb does not match the ALBulbs result, investigate the difference before attempting to install a replacement.
Aftermarket Turn Signal Assemblies
Aftermarket headlamps, tail lamps, mirrors, and signal assemblies may use different bulbs or LED modules than the original factory equipment.
If a previous owner changed the lighting assembly, the factory bulb specification may no longer match what is physically installed on the vehicle.
Look for markings or part information on the assembly and inspect the existing bulb before ordering.
What If a New Turn Signal Bulb Still Does Not Work?
If a new bulb does not restore the turn signal, the problem may be elsewhere in the circuit.
Possible causes can include:
- A damaged or corroded bulb socket
- Loose wiring
- Poor electrical ground
- A blown fuse
- A damaged connector
- A switch or control module problem
- A wiring fault
If several turn signals or exterior lights stop working at the same time, further electrical diagnosis may be necessary.
