Finding the correct automotive headlight bulbs for your vehicle can be more complicated than simply matching the year, make, and model. Many vehicles use different bulbs for the low beam and high beam, while others may have multiple factory headlight configurations depending on trim level, lighting package, or headlamp assembly.

Low Beam and High Beam Headlight Bulbs

Many vehicles use separate bulbs for the low beam and high beam. Other headlamp assemblies may use one bulb or lighting system to perform both functions.

The low beam is the primary headlight used during normal nighttime driving. It is designed to illuminate the road ahead while limiting glare toward other drivers. The high beam provides additional forward illumination when conditions permit its use.

When reviewing your ALBulbs results, always pay attention to the position listed with the bulb number. A bulb identified for the high beam should not automatically be assumed to fit the low beam, even when the two bulbs look similar.

Your results may also include other forward-lighting positions such as daytime running lights, parking lights, cornering lights, or fog lights depending on the vehicle.

Common Automotive Headlight Bulb Sizes

Automotive headlight bulbs are commonly identified by a standardized bulb number or designation. Depending on the vehicle and lighting system, you may encounter bulb numbers such as:

  • H11
  • H7
  • H9
  • 9005
  • 9006
  • 9012
  • D1S
  • D2S
  • D3S
  • D5S

The exact bulb required depends on the vehicle and the specific headlamp position. Similar-looking bulbs are not necessarily interchangeable. Differences can include the base design, electrical connector, wattage, operating voltage, light-source technology, and physical dimensions.

Always match the bulb number shown for the specific application rather than choosing a replacement based on appearance alone.

Halogen Headlight Bulbs

Halogen headlights remain common on many cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans. A halogen bulb typically produces light by passing electrical current through a tungsten filament inside a glass capsule containing halogen gas.

If your vehicle was designed to use a halogen bulb, the simplest replacement is normally the same bulb number and technology specified for that lighting position.

Manufacturers may offer several versions of the same bulb size, including standard replacements, longer-life bulbs, higher-output bulbs, and bulbs designed to produce a different color appearance. Regardless of the product variation, the underlying bulb number still needs to match the vehicle application.

When installing a traditional halogen bulb, avoid touching the glass portion with bare fingers. Oils and contaminants transferred to the glass can create localized heat and may reduce bulb life.

HID and Xenon Headlight Bulbs

Some vehicles use HID, or high-intensity discharge, headlights. These systems are also commonly referred to as xenon headlights.

Unlike a traditional halogen filament bulb, an HID system creates light through an electrical arc inside the bulb. HID systems may use additional components such as a ballast or igniter to operate the light source.

Common automotive HID bulb families include designations such as D1S, D2S, D3S, D4S, and D5S.

If your vehicle was equipped with HID headlights from the factory, do not assume that a halogen or LED bulb with a similar shape is a direct replacement. Confirm the exact HID bulb designation and the headlamp configuration before ordering.

Factory LED Headlights

Many newer vehicles use factory LED headlamp systems. These can differ significantly from traditional replaceable-bulb headlights.

In some factory LED systems, the light source is integrated into the headlamp assembly instead of being designed as a conventional removable bulb. If that type of lighting system develops a problem, replacing a traditional bulb may not be an option.

Depending on the vehicle, diagnosis may involve the LED module, driver, wiring, control electronics, or complete headlamp assembly.

If your ALBulbs result identifies a factory LED lighting system rather than a conventional bulb number, inspect the vehicle and consult the appropriate service information before attempting a replacement.

Can You Replace Halogen Headlights With LED Bulbs?

LED replacement bulbs are available for many traditional halogen bulb sizes. However, matching the bulb base does not automatically mean an LED retrofit will work correctly in every vehicle or headlamp assembly.

LED compatibility can be affected by several factors, including:

  • Headlamp housing and reflector design
  • Projector design
  • Beam pattern
  • Physical clearance behind the bulb
  • Dust cover clearance
  • Heat-sink or fan clearance
  • Electrical polarity
  • Bulb-out monitoring systems
  • CAN bus electronics
  • Local lighting regulations

An LED alternative is an additional shopping option. It does not change the original bulb fitment identified for the vehicle.

Why Your Vehicle May Have More Than One Headlight Configuration

Vehicle manufacturers frequently offer multiple headlamp systems within the same model year. The differences may depend on trim level, factory options, appearance packages, projector headlights, HID packages, LED packages, or other equipment.

A vehicle that appears identical from the outside may therefore require a different headlight bulb than another vehicle with the same year and model name.

This is one reason ALBulbs may ask you to select a specific configuration after choosing your vehicle.

If you are unsure which configuration your vehicle has, inspect the existing bulb and headlamp assembly. You may also find useful information in the owner’s manual, vehicle equipment information, or markings on the headlamp housing.

Understanding Your ALBulbs Headlight Results

ALBulbs may show a verification label alongside a headlight fitment result. These labels help communicate how much supporting fitment information is currently associated with the result.

You may see:

  • Not Verified — The result has supporting fitment information, but ALBulbs does not currently have enough qualifying confirmation to assign a higher verification level.
  • Verified — The fitment has stronger supporting evidence, such as qualifying manufacturer information or confirmation from multiple sources.
  • Cross-Checked Verified — The fitment has a higher level of independent supporting confirmation.

A Not Verified label does not automatically mean the bulb is incorrect. It means additional confirmation is recommended before purchasing.

Check the Existing Headlight Bulb Before You Buy

Whenever practical, compare the ALBulbs result with the bulb currently installed in your vehicle before ordering a replacement.

Look for the bulb number printed or stamped on the existing bulb and compare its connector, base, and lighting technology with the replacement you are considering.

This is especially important when your vehicle has multiple possible headlamp configurations or when the ALBulbs result is marked Not Verified.

Remember that a previous owner may have installed aftermarket headlamp assemblies. An aftermarket assembly can sometimes use a different bulb than the original factory lighting system.

If the bulb currently installed in your vehicle does not match the ALBulbs result, do not force a replacement simply because a particular bulb number appears in the database. Investigate the difference first.

Replace Headlight Bulbs in Pairs?

When one traditional headlight bulb fails, the bulb on the opposite side may have accumulated a similar amount of operating time. Replacing both bulbs at the same time can help keep the color and light output between the left and right sides more consistent.

This is particularly worth considering with halogen and HID bulbs because light output and color characteristics can change as bulbs age.

However, always confirm that both sides of the vehicle use the same bulb number and lighting system before ordering a pair.
